Same Age Sculptures

2008 / air-dry clay / sizes vary, approx 4" x 4" x 4" / Collaboration with Michael Crowe

This series of sculptures were made when Michael Crowe and I were the exact same age; 30 years, 5 months and 17 days old. Michael, being older by 34 days, made one sculpture a day for 34 days. Then I began, and 34 days/sculptures later Michael's first sculpture was coupled with my first sculpture, his second with my second, and so on. Each sculpture was produced from the same fist-sized ball of clay and made with eyes closed in an attempt to remove aesthetic anxiety and emphasize surprise and play.

Age is frequently used to compare what two people have accomplished, creating a winner and a loser. This work gently throttles that belittling system.

A new version of Same Age Sculptures made when we were 34 years & 136 days old, was included in The Feeling of Things curated by Elodie Royer & Yoann Gourmel at FRAC, LePlateau Paris. The group exhibition took as its point of departure the work and spirit of the inventor, artist, designer, writer, illustrator, graphic designer and teacher, Bruno Munari, “a Peter Pan with the calibre of a Leonardo”...
