Sweden (Borrowed and Stolen) |
2002. Birdhouses on loan from local residents, signs, stuffed beaver, Ikea pencils.
Made during a six-week teaching residency at Orebro Art School, Sweden.
One of the first things that struck me about Sweden was the way that people care for the birds. Nearly every house has a smaller version of itself built in the garden to house and feed them. I was touched by this personification of animals, by the assumption that what is right for us must also be right for them.
I started a campaign of borrowing the birdhouses. I visited all of the households in the area and temporarily swapped their birdhouses for a hand-made sign stating that the birdhouse had been borrowed by me. There was a shelf built into the sign for the birds to feed from and branches for them to rest. The sign was installed in the hole where the birdhouse used to be. The exhibition consisted of both the borrowed birdhouses and the surrounding area full of my signs.
